Throughout Charly Kocher’s life, the theme of marrying seemingly disparate concepts into one has repeated itself time again. An engineer by training and a chef by passion, the Swiss-born and educated Charly opened one of the first Chinese-European fusion restaurants in Boston, which he owned and very successfully operated for over 20 years. Charly’s paternal grandfather was a blacksmith, while his maternal grandfather was baker and a pastry-chef. This lineage has given Charly a passion and the talent to constantly search for new ways of improving the cooking experience, and this combination of engineering and culinary skill is what gave birth to the FIREGRILL™.
As Charly tells it……
“One day, on a cold winter night, I was relaxing in front of the fireplace, enjoying the warmth of the burning logs, watching the dancing flames and sipping a glass of Wine. Mesmerized by the magic of fire, my thoughts drifted……to the campsite in Maine and the great flavors from cooking our food on the open camp fire …..to that day down by the lake, where we slowly fire-roasted a whole leg of lamb on our home made rotisserie …..to that small village in Tuscany, where we enjoyed a crispy, thin crusted fresh Mozzarella and basil pizza, baked in a wood-fired brick-oven. All those great flavors reinvigorated my senses, but a thought in the back of my mind brought me back to reality. I still had the two perfectly marinated steaks sitting in the fridge next to some sweet red peppers, eggplant and zucchini waiting to be grilled outdoors on the gas grill, with the snow flying and temperatures in the twenties…… man…..there has to be a better way… how can I get that steak in that fire?"
...and that’s how it all started.
